Car driver crossed blindly in front of bus Crash could have ended in disaster By Georgia O’Connor-Harding MORE DETAILS have emerged of how lucky passengers on a bus, and the driver of the car it collided with, were in a crash at the intersection of Dawsons and Jones Rds in Rolleston. Police revealed yesterday the driver who caused the crash followed another vehicle across Jones Rd from Dawsons Rd at about 20km/h without apparently checking if vehicles were coming. Said Constable Nick Lewis: “He came up behind another car going through the intersection and because the other car was going through, he just assumed it was safe and followed the other car through without stopping.” The bus was travelling at about 85km/h. The bus driver took evasive action, but the vehicles collided. The bus stopped under trees in a

paddock. The car was extensively damaged. Luckily no-one was injured. But Constable Lewis said the crash could have ended in disaster. He said the bus driver’s only option was to swerve left. It avoided the bus broad-siding the car. “He did what any prudent driver would do in an attempt to avoid a sudden obstruction,” Constable Lewis said. “A bus that size isn’t going to stop on time . . . he tried braking and it happened so quick,” The intersection is known for its major crashes. In 2015, a concrete truck rolled into a hedge after it was hit by a van load of tourists who failed to stop. But Constable Lewis said it is not the intersection that is dangerous; it is people choosing to ignore the warning signs. “It has got stops signs there that are clearly visible . . . but

for some reason when I am on patrol, I see people going through there at high speeds – 50, 60, 70km/h – and most of them are locals,” he said. Constable Lewis said any given week, multiple people will ignore the stop sign. The car driver was fined $150 for failing to stop at an intersection, said Constable Lewis.

A clown from Christchurch came close to causing major carnage at the Dawsons/ Jones Rds intersection – because he didn’t stop or look when he crossed Dawsons Rd and into the path of a bus. The skill of the bus driver in avoiding a direct broadside hit was admirable. A bus at 85km/h powering into a car is not going to be a good outcome. The car driver would have likely been killed; the bus driver and his passengers would have been seriously injured, or worse. But it’s not only the clowns from Christchurch to worried about – local drivers too are a problem. - Barry Clarke

News Planning staff in short supply By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A SHORT supply of town planning staff across the country is causing issues as Selwyn’s district plan review gets underway. A report written by district plan committee chairman Tim Harris said one of the “major challenges” it had dealt with over the past two years was the ability to attract and then retain quality staff. The report was discussed at the committee’s meetTim Harris ing last week. Mr Harris said it has two vacancies for town planning staff it had been unable to appoint. Currently, the district council has seven town planning staff working on the project with 10 staff employed all together. “This is a nationwide thing. Planners across the country are fairly thin on the ground...a lot of them are in consultancies,” Mr Harris said. His report said the review has relied heavily on external con-

sultants and this has had some budgetary consequences. “This continues to be a major factor and a risk to the review process,” it said. But Mr Harris said the cost of employing external consultants are not estimated yet. “That is part of that pool of money budgeted for the forthcoming years to get through the process,” he said. Selwyn’s district plan review could cost between $3.5 to $5 million which will be imple-

mented over the coming years. Mr Harris said it is difficult to gauge the costs of external consultants and it depends on the scale of submissions and issues that come out of the consultation. The plan is legally required to be reviewed every 10 years. It is estimated costs including employing external consultants, consultation with the public, organising hearings, commissioners, GIS mapping could add up to $1 to $ 2 million a year.

Mr Harris said when it needs specialised pieces of work done it will pick out the consultants needed from its supply panel, they will complete the work before sending through the bill. The district council has a supply panel of about 22 consultants specialising in areas including arboriculture, architecture, water, earthquakes and urban design. A draft of the district plan review may not be ready until 2019. The first round of consultation with the public is due to begin in July next year with consultation having already begun with targeted landowners. Mr Harris’ report also discussed was difficulty in developing a communications engagement process. In Brief ADDITIONAL PARKING A report looking at additional car parking options across Selwyn is still to be completed. Selwyn Times was told in October district council staff were preparing an options report on additional car parking for consideration by the property committee in November. A district council spokesman said the report was still being finalised. “Discussion with property owners are ongoing and are confidential to them and the district council,” he said. No further consultation is planned as the car-park developments being currently considered are part of the Lincoln Town Centre Masterplan which was consulted on and adopted in May. BROOM REMOVAL The scrub weed broom, described as “rampant” at the edge of Lake Coleridge Cemetery, may be removed before the end of the year. The district council is implementing a plan to spray all the broom within 5m of the area. The issue was first raised in July in a Lake Coleridge Community Committee meeting agenda where it was described in the report as “becoming rampant”. A district council spokesman said the work might be done before Christmas.

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding WHEN A thrift shop in Burnham nearly closed three years ago, Heather Wilson took it upon herself to ensure it stayed open. Mrs Wilson had volunteered at the thrift shop Twice as Nice for 12 years before she took it on as a private enterprise – without taking a single wage for herself. The shop was a military initiative, set up to support communities affected by the conflict in Timor, where New Zealand military personal were deployed. When decisions were made that could have seen its closure, Mrs Wilson took the shop on herself to continue supporting people in the Burnham community. Now her work has been recognised with a Kiwibank award. She was one of three Selwyn residents last week to receive a Local Hero Award. Mrs Wilson was recognised along with Prebbleton’s Christopher Martin and Rolleston’s Chris Allan. Mr Martin is the founder and lead consultant for 4YP (For Young People) and has worked in

the youth development sector for more than 30 years. Mr Allan has been helping at-risk youth in the Canterbury

region for many years through his organisation The Joshua Foundation. Mrs Wilson said like most

volunteers, she hoped to slip under the radar and the person who nominated her had a lot to answer for.

“We are a little fish in a big pond but philanthropically are trying to make a difference in our own backyard,” she said. The shop was started to help those affected by the Timor conflict when people were donating goods to be sent over to orphanages and hospitals. “After a while, no-one could afford the freight to send the tangible goods over so they decided to set up this thrift shop and sell everything,” she said. The shop, made up of about seven volunteers also works to support the Selwyn community. It has also shifted its focus to the Pacific Islands, sending over goods to communities affected by natural disasters. The shop sells its donated items on a 50-50 commission. Mrs Wilson has also used the shop to help fundraise for events including the annual Christmas grotto and fete, and supported a family going to the Invictus Games.

Fire could have been disastrous By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A SMALL electrical fire at Lincoln Primary School could have been disastrous if it had happened during the night. Lincoln volunteer fire brigade chief fire officer Jeremy Greenwood said the fire at about 7.40am on Tuesday was detected by a staff member. “A staff member arrived and smelled the smoke and rang us straight away,” he said. Fire fighters responded quickly to the fire located in the roof of the foyer of the junior campus and extinguished it, he said. “I think it has been lucky to be discovered when it was. Perhaps if it had started in early evening or after people had left it possibly could have been more of an issue,” Mr Greenwood said. Fire fighters had to remove parts of the ceiling to locate the the fire. While he was unsure of the cause, Mr Greenwood said it appeared to be an electrical fault. As a result of the electrical damage the junior campus lost power and about 180 pupils have been shifted over to Lincoln High School until the beginning of the new school year.

By Andrew King FIRE RESTRICTIONS have been imposed in the Selwyn district as summer temperatures soar. The restrictions came into force at midnight on Saturday. Open fires and rubbish burning is prohibited without a permit. Anyone wanting to burn off stubble will need to phone Fire and Emergency New Zealand to get advice on the required conditions. Gas cookers and barbecues and contained barbecues are allowed as are fires if they are lit inside a drum with a lid, have a flue or can be spark arrested. Rural principal fire officer for Selwyn and Christchurch, Darrin Woods, said there could be more restrictions on the way if the conditions don’t ease up. “We could bring in a prohibited fire season where restrictions are more strict,” he said. Rain is predicted today and tomorrow across the district with a high expected of 19 deg C tomorrow before the clouds clear on Thursday and Friday with temperatures in the mid-20.

The public will get to have their say on the district council’s Gambling Venues Policy in March as part of the review. It aims to control the growth of gambling in Selwyn and to minimise harm caused by gambling. Selwyn has 112 poker machines located across the district. Rolleston has 35 poker machines while Lincoln 15, Darfield 14, and Prebbleton nine. Latest quarterly figures

from The Department of Internal Affairs showed gaming machine expenditure in Selwyn from July to September was $977,922. The district council’s project manager John Christensen said it is currently seeking feedback from stakeholders. Stakeholders include poker machine venues, societies operating poker machines, the Gambling Helpline, the Problem Gambling Foundation, Ngai Tahu and the Salvation Army. The existing policy was first adopted in March 2015, with the policy required to be reviewed on a three-yearly cycle. Mr Christensen said

Zoe achieved first equal in health and physical education this year along with good achievements in other subjects. Outside of the classroom Zoe has achieved at a high standard in the sporting area. She was awarded colours for football, most valuable player in her futsal team and is a top performer in athletics and crosscountry. Student Sophie Parker was awarded the Fitzgerald Cup for excellence in year 9 for overall highest academic standard. Sophie achieved first in English, art and Japanese, and gained distinctions in maths and digital technologies. Deputy principal Stephen Rout said these are impressive achievements making her a worthy winner of this award. The cup for involvement in the junior school going to a year 9 or 10 boy who has been involved most significantly in the wider life of the school. Jesse Waswo is the winner for this year. This year Jesse has been a deputy house leader, member of the house sub-council and on the junior council. Mr Rout said these are significant roles in terms of time and Jesse undertakes these with enthusiasm and commitment. Jesse was also a member of the school’s adventure racing team, played in the junior boys’ rugby team and was a member of the school Ki-o-Rahi team. The school council award for involvement in school goes to the year 9 or 10 girl who has been involved in the wider life of the school in the most significant way.

SCHOOLS As a member of the kapa haka group Laura has been fully involved and is a leader. Christmas comes to Flemington CHRISTMAS HAS made its way to Flemington subdivision in Lincoln. The free annual community Christmas event was held recently on the Flemington Reserve. First National Real Estate Progressive director Sue Mullins said it was a hot day with hats and sunscreen put to good use. She said there were balloons for the young children and the kid’s bouncy castle this year was a popular attraction. The day had live music from musicians The Butlers, keeping the mood of the day light and breezy. The Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade provided the young members of the community the thrill of climbing into the cab of a truck. Mrs Mullins said Flemington developers have given a generous donation to the brigade. . “Given that First National are the supporters of the National Burns Centre throughout New Zealand this is a fantastic fit,” she said. The nationwide company’s charitable trust First National Charitable Foundation are sponsors and supporters of the National Burn Centre. First National Real Estate Progressive are the exclusive listing agent for the Flemington subdivision. The day also included Santa arriving on a Harley-Davidson before children took part in a joyful lolly scramble. Public gives feedback on water By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE PUBLIC has given their feedback on a series of seminars aimed at reducing tensions over how water issues in the Selwyn-Waihora catchment are managed. Suggestions ranging from shutting down intensive pig farming on the banks of Selwyn to creating more wetlands was collated into a recent Environment Canterbury report. It was discussed at the Selwyn Waihora Zone Allen Lim Committee last week. It comes after the committee began the series in June in a bid to reduce tensions between ECan and residents. In the final seminar series held in September, participants were asked to discuss what needed to be done to reduce water issues. About 30 participants’ suggestions were listed in the report with possible responses made by

THE END of year is nigh, but West Melton School pupils are showing no signs of slowing down. From testing out their golf skills to taking part in the Canterbury Triathlon - it has been another busy term for the school. Promotions and marketing officer Rita Spadoni said the entire school has been taking lessons with Canterbury Golf and it was time to test the green. “There may have been no ‘birdies’ or ‘eagles’ but an enjoyable day was had by all,” she said. Ellesmere College year 13 student Ella McClure, was named St John national cadet of the year for 2017. She is also been the chair of the Selwyn Youth Council. She talks to Nicole Ashby What was the driving force behind you joining St John back in 2010? Like so many youth members, I started the programme because I wanted to fulfil what remains an endless thirst to learn new things. I have always had a passion for helping people and knew from a young age that I wanted a career in the medical field. Joining the Ellesmere division seemed like a good way to help me get there. At the time I did not realise the lifelong relationships and skills I would develop. I also had no idea how often I would be pushed outside of my comfort zone and grow as a result. The programme has shaped me into the person I have become today, joining St John Youth would have to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. Throughout your time in St John what has made you stay committed? With no hesitation, it would

be the people I have been able to meet during my time in St John. Often described as a family, you are surrounded by so many likeminded individuals. I have made some incredible friends through St John Youth, they share the same inner passion and drive. Meeting young people not just from my local division, but across the South Island, the country and even internationally, after a trip to the international cadet camp in Hong Kong, has been a real highlight. When you joined did you ever think you would become the national cadet of the year? Growing up I was always inspired by the cadet of the years. They were amazing role models, offering immense support and encouragement to younger youth members. I had always aspired to be Canterbury district cadet of the year but never imagined being selected as both the South Island region and national cadet of the year. It is very clear that in St John you get out of the youth programme what you put into it. Right from the beginning,

I was aiming high, having fun and giving everything a go. It is quite incredible to reflect on what many cadets, including myself, have been able to achieve as a result of this mindset. Being a national cadet must be a time-consuming role, how have you been able to manage your time with that, being deputy head girl, chair of the Selwyn Youth Council and just normal life?Â The role of national cadet of the year is one of great privilege but also great responsibility, there is a certain amount of time you need to invest into the role. This year was definitely action-packed, but I was so lucky to have an incredible team of district cadets of the year and leaders helping me every step of the way. St John is very understanding that school and family come first. At the beginning of 2017 I set a number of goals I wanted to achieve over my term, this kept me focused on what I was really passionate about. Organisation and time management was key, a busy year but one I will never forget.

new things What has been your main highlight about being in this role? During this year we celebrated 90 years of St John Youth in New Zealand, this was a real highlight. It was the perfect opportunity to reflect on the past, St John Youth in New Zealand has a very proud and rich history. But it was also an opportunity to think about the future, and what is next for the youth programme. In April this year, we released the new youth strategy which outlines how we will remain a relevant and engaging platform for positive youth development. What I love most about this document is that it was shaped entirely by young people. As a result, some new and exciting initiatives such as a scholarship and internship programme have been introduced. What are some of the other opportunities you have been offered throughout the year? There is a huge scope to the role, from spending time with some of the youngest members of our organisation during a weekend camp to participating in the likes of a priory chapter meeting. Priory chapter is the highest performance level of St John in New Zealand, it is very

special to have this platform to advocate for the voices of young people. In October, to match 90 years of youth, 90 cadets were presented their grand priory award at Government House. I was master of ceremonies for this memorable event. I also led the St John Youth advisory, made up of all 22 district cadets of the year. This is another fantastic opportunity for us to provide youth voice and work on exciting projects. What are some key attributes a national cadet needs? The role is defined as being an ambassador for the programme, a voice for younger cadets and acting as a positive role model.

ICC Under19 Cricket World Cup is coming to Selwyn In January next year the next generation of future cricketing stars will descend upon New Zealand's shores for the ICC Under19 Cricket World Cup 2018. Selwyn is hosting 17 matches at the Lincoln Green and Bert Sutcliffe Oval at Lincoln University during the tournament, including the plate quarter finals, semi-finals and final. Entry to all games is free. This will be the 12th edition of the tournament and the third on New Zealand soil, following previous events in 2002 and 2010. We will join Whangarei, Tauranga, Christchurch and Queenstown in hosting 48 matches throughout the tournament. Canterbury will host 26 matches across four venues; Rangiora Oval (Rangiora), Hagley Oval (Christchurch), and Bert Sutcliffe Oval and Lincoln No.3 (Lincoln).

Here is a summary of Selwyn District Council services and opening hours during the holiday period. The Selwyn Aquatic Centre is closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Selwyn swims 10,000km Swim to Summer was a huge success, as over 200 people registered and logged their laps each time they came in for a swim. A total of 10,000km was swum over the 15-week challenge set by the Selwyn Aquatic Centre. The aim of the challenge was to get more Selwyn residents swimming, more often. Aquatic Facilities Manager Kathy Moore says there was great feedback received on the event, with many people achieving the goals they had set. “It was great to see the friendships and competitiveness that developed throughout the swimathon, connecting those within our community,” Ms Moore says. Another key objective of Swim to Summer was to raise awareness and donations for two deserving charities, the Breast Cancer Foundation and Prostate Cancer Foundation. Through generous participant donations, a sausage sizzle, bake sale, Glentunnel school mufti day and a raffle, over $1,500 was raised with further donations still coming in. The two drop-off days were held near Leeston and Darfield providing residents with an alternative drop off point for their waste. Over the two days, 163 vehicles dropped off their garden waste and scrap metal for a small charge. The events were staffed by the members of the Ellesmere Heritage Park and the Malvern Lions Club, with assistance from Council contractors. Funds from the days have been donated to both charities with the Ellesmere Heritage Park Trust receiving $815 and the Malvern Lions Club over $900.

Global plight recognised by student By Georgia O’Connor-Harding DARFIELD HIGH School’s Bena Pearson has taken a big step to help her fellow students who struggle to afford sanitary protection during menstruation. Bena, 14, has described the increasing global problem of affordability for sanitary hygiene products as “heartbreaking.” In a bid to help the girls at her school, Bena distributed $500 of sanitary products last week. About 1672 items were presented, with products not taken to be used in the community or another high school in need. Her initiative was allocated $500 by New Zealand Red Cross youth project’s Bounce programme. Participants were asked to write down ideas of how they would like to help other people, with Bena’s goal to support women struggling to afford sanitary items selected for the grant. It is recognised by the United Nations as a global public health and humanrights issue. It became important to Bena after she read an article about

SCHOOLS ARE wrapping up for the year in the next few days and most are celebrating the achievements of students at prize-giving ceremonies and end-of-year assemblies. I am sure senior students from our local high schools will be relieved that NCEA exams are now over and they can turn their focus to summer holiday jobs or just enjoying a break from study. My daughter is finishing high school this year so this represents the end of an era for me. It seems quite strange to realise that after so many years being involved in the school system as a parent I won’t be any longer. However, I do often get invited to our local schools in my role as MP for Selwyn, so I will still be able to look forward to that ongoing involvement next year. Year 13 students intending to enrol in tertiary study next year will be relieved to have some clarity at last around exactly who will qualify for the new policy of making the first year of tertiary study free. Ellesmere College’s fairytale mash-up A MUSICAL mash-up of popular fairytales has enchanted audiences in Leeston. Ellesmere College students put on a production of Into the Woods JR recently. The show featured classical fictional characters from Cinder-

ella and Little Red Riding Hood to Jack and the Beanstalk. It was based on United States composer Stephen Sondheim and playwright James Lapine’s Tony award-winning musical Into the Woods. Teachers, parents and the

drama, music, art and technology departments helped get the show off the ground. Administration support teacher Lindsay Cook said from the reports he has heard, it was one of the best shows the school has done.

TWO LADBROOKS School pupils have made the most of a new initiative aimed at supporting 10-year-old entrepreneurs. Jack Cameron and Jordan Bately were recipients of Mayor Sam Broughton’s 10TEN10 fund which gives 10-year-olds $10 to support their new entrepreneurial ideas. Pupils were required to write in their ideas down and send them to Mr Broughton with the winners chosen last month. As

a result of receiving $10 each, Jordan and Jack decided to create an event for other Selwyn children based on their passion for building and construction. The pupils held two freestyle building workshops in Lincoln recently which were attended by 21 children. After receiving the funding to start their idea, the pupils contacted businesses throughout Canterbury to support their project with off-cuts of wood. They also secured corporate

funding from Mitre10 Mega Hornby, Placemakers Hornby and The Warehouse. Due to this, the boys were able to save the $10 notes from the district council and, along with the takings during the one-and-half-hour sessions, made more than $100. Mr Broughton will also give a $100 donation to the boys’ chosen charity – Lincoln Envirotown Trust. Planning for the event included organising advertising, purchasing of materials and risk management planning.

Weedons give Leeston-Southbridge first loss STRONG individual displays with bat and ball helped Weedons hand LeestonSouthbridge their first defeat in the Canterbury Country premier one-day competition on Saturday. Batting first at Weedons, the home side were anchored by opening batsman James Richards, who scored his maiden century for the club. After fellow opener Josh Watson was dismissed for 12, Richards and No 3 Brad Nightingale put together a partnership of 66 to have the score at 104/1 in the 24th over. Richards was eventually dismissed by Angus Hooper in the 42nd over, but the damage had already been done. His 113 came off 135 deliveries and included one six and 10 fours. A quick-fire 44 from Matt Parker helped Weedons to a total of 251/5 from 45 overs. Toby Doyle then got LeestonSouthbridge away to a decent start in their run chase with a knock of 54. At 97/3 after 20 overs, the visitors looked in with a shot of defending their undefeated record. However, three wickets fell for no runs leaving LeestonSouthbridge scrambling at 97/6. Special Olympics medal haul A SELWYN-BASED swimming team have returned from the National Special Olympics in Wellington with a haul of medals. The team has been training hard at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre for the past year under the guidance of coaches Di Hunter and Jessica Waters. The team represented Canterbury with distinction at the four-yearly national event, which was attended by 1200 athletes from around New Zealand. Ethan Hamilton-Currey, of Southbridge, returned with the largest collection, winning medals in all events he entered. Hamilton-Currey won gold in the 25m and 50m freestyle events, as well as in the 4x50m relay with Canterbury teammates Shawn O’Rourke, Nathan Winkelman and Jonathan Smitham. Hamilton-Currey also won bronze in the 50m backstroke. Special Olympics swimmers compete in various divisions depending on their qualifying times. Jason Webster collected a gold medal in his 50m free division, as well as a silver in the 50m backstroke. In the 25m backstroke, Ben Marshall claimed gold and Shawn O’Rourke silver in their respective divisions.

Broughton, Forster claim athletics titles for Lincoln LINCOLN HIGH School students Maia Broughton and Nic Forster both claimed national titles at the recent New Zealand secondary school track and field championships in Hawkes Bay. Broughton, 15, successfully defended the junior girls 200m title she won 12 months ago. Her winning time in the final of 24.52sec was an improvement on her 2016 winning time of 24.99sec. She also finished second in the junior girls 100m in 12.13sec, behind Genna Maples, of Wanganui Collegiate, who won with a time of 12.07sec. Forster won the senior boys long jump with 6.57m. The winning effort was his first attempt in the sand. The 17-year-old also finished sixth in the senior boys 110m hurdles and made the semi-finals of the 100m. Carlone Richards finished 31st in the junior girls long jump and made the semi-finals of the 400m. Lexi Richards finished eighth in the senior girls pole vault, 12th in the javelin and 22nd in the long jump. Tayla Clarke finished fifth in the senior girls discus and seventh in the shot put. Haidee Middlewood-Krisnic finished 10th in the senior girls hammer throw, 12th in the discus and 17th in the shot put.

Leave a light on for moths Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology (insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us MORE THAN 1800 moth species are known in New Zealand and 90 per cent of them are endemic (only found in New Zealand). Entomologists use powerful lights to monitor moths present in different habitats and can catch as many as 100 species in a diverse habitat on a good night. Your outside house light will also attract moths from your garden or beyond. One moth species I captured with my camera around a light was the black-lyre leafroller (cnephasia jactatana). The 10mm long endemic moth species is easy to identify by the distinctive symmetrical ‘S’

markings on its forewings. It is a pest of kiwifruit leaves, preferring to lay its eggs on the upper surface of older, rather than the younger, foliage. They are also known to cause fruit damage. Other plant hosts include grapes, citrus, fuchsia,

eucalyptus, persimmon and ebonies. The moths are most commonly observed in December and January when females release a chemical attractant called a sex pheromone which pulls in the males to start the courtship process.

Rolleston Prison gifts tomato plants to social housing tenants MORE than 5000 tomato plants have been handed over to the Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust to be donated to city housing tenants. The plants are an annual project at Rolleston Prison and are grown from seed to plant ready for home gardens. The plants take eight to ten weeks from planting and germination until they are ready to be collected. “This project gives prisoners an opportunity to give something back and provides people in the community with the means to grow healthy food for themselves and their family,” said Rolleston Prison director Mike Howson. “Many of the prisoners know what it is like to struggle

financially and they enjoy the opportunity to do something for the community, especially near to Christmas. Seeing the plants leave the prison for a person’s garden means a great deal to the men involved,” he said. More than 40,000 tomato plants have been cultivated and donated since the Tomatoes for Tenants Project began in 2008 and the annual delivery of the tomatoes is highly anticipated by the city housing tenants. Rick Fraser of Ōtautahi said the trust values the partnership with Rolleston Prison and many tenants appreciate the plants and save a space in their gardens for them. Leftover plants are gifted to schools and community groups.

European Escape takes over from Kuga By Ross Kiddie ESCAPE HAS been a popular brand for Ford New Zealand. That being the case, I was surprised when the name of the sport utility vehicle was dropped in favour of Kuga. The latter also sold well, but now Ford has reverted back to Escape, the latest name change also coinciding with a new release. Those who do relate to the old Escape will be aware of its pedigree, it was a model shared similarly with Mazda (Tribute) in New Zealand and had its origins in Taiwan. The new Escape is totally different. It is now sourced from Europe, Spain to be exact, and unlike its V6 predecessor it has only four cylinders, but there are many varying engine types – diesel and petrol and in 1.5-litre or 2-litre capacity. The range is extensive with seven models starting from $37,990, some offered in four-wheel-drive. The test car was Titaniumbadged and sits in the line-up at $53,490, there is only one model with a higher ticket and that is the diesel powered version with the same specification ($54,990). The 2-litre petrol, all-wheeldrive variant is certainly a worthy choice, the Escape in this form is a cross between the traditional SUV and a sports car, that comment simply because of its engine output, it is rated at 178kW and 345Nm. That’s mostly due to the turbocharging system fitted to the twin-camshaft, 16-valve unit, it offers significant boost at a low operating area. Peak power arrives at just 5500rpm while maximum torque is available all of the way from 2000rpm to 4500rpm. The significance of those figures is the punchy way the engine works. It is feisty and lively, yet it delivers with little audible sound. If you also factor in the way power is transferred through a silky smooth six-speed automatic

gearbox, the driveline is structured for quick momentum with a responsive nature. The Escape in this form will accelerate from a standstill in 8sec and will complete an overtaking time of 4.9sec to make 120km/h from 80km/h. My comments about sports car performance aren’t an exaggeration.

Ford is quite proud of its Ecoboost range of engines, they have been developed not so much for the performance I’ve just commented on, but they also stand out for their economy. As it turned out I drove the new Escape at city speeds for a fair chunk of my evaluation and that wasn’t kind to the economy, the

fuel usage readout listing around 10.6-litres per 100km (27mpg) when I took the car back to the dealership. That’s quite distant to Ford’s combined average cycle claim of 8.6l/100km (33mpg), but that’s put into perspective when you take into account the 6.2l/100km (46mpg) sitting instantaneously at a steady 100km/h, the engine turning over at just 1750rpm. The evaluation car was riding on sport specification Continental tyres (235/45 x 19in). With their wide footprint and formidable reputation there is a lot of steering feel and strong selfcentering feel within the steering mechanism. Turn-in is direct and accuracy within the handling

process is positive. I particularly like the way the Escape handles, and that doesn’t surprise me. I’m a big European Ford fan, and the way the designers engineer balance and handling ability into the chassis of all their varying model styles is a credit. The Escape is also fitted with state-of-the-art gear for comfort, convenience and safety. Some of the major items include full leather trim with heated front seats, satellite navigation, full length electric sunroof, voice recognition communication and infotainment, and radar cruise control. Of course, it is also fivestar safety rated. I was a little ambivalent when I picked up the Escape, I knew that its engine wouldn’t live up to the thrill of the old Volvo-derived, 2.5-litre, turbo five-cylinder unit found in some variants of the old Kuga, still one of my favourite engines. That being the case, the Escape’s 2-litre engine had to really work hard to win me over and I should have known it wouldn’t disappoint. Its honesty, power outputs and generally quiet operating manner make it a real honey. Just as well, then, that the rest of the vehicle has the quality to support it; the entire package is quite outstanding. It will certainly lure Escape buyers of old, and those who are contemplating trading up from Kuga.

Turn the heat up with chilli By Henri Ham SOME LIKE it hot, and I’m one of them. I love chilli. The hotter the better as far as I’m concerned. And, I know I’m not alone. There’s a lot of excitement from other die-hard, and not-so-diehard, chilli fans. I like bhut jolokia (also known as ghost pepper) which until 2007 was the world’s hottest chilli. And in the last couple of years and there are other varieties such as chilli red hot pepper, jalapeno, jalapeno red flame and habanero Rred (measured at more than 200,000 Scoville Heat Units for those who are interested). But what’s really got people talking is carolina reaper. This chilli, named for the shape of its tail, is the current holder of the ‘world’s hottest chilli’ title and measuring an incredible 1,569,300 SHU. Though there is a pretender to the throne called dragon’s breath waiting in the wings. Carolina Reaper is in fact a hybrid of bhut jolokia and habanero red and, as I write this, I’m nibbling one I’ve grown. Great flavour. What I also like about growing chilli, other than the taste of course, is that you don’t need a lot of space for them and once planted they don’t require much care. They grow well in confined spaces (including in pots) and thrive with little watering. Once you’ve got your seedlings or plants, look for a well-drained, sheltered and sunny spot in your garden – the same type of place you’d grow tomatoes. In fact, tomatoes are a great companion plant for chilli and they taste great together in home-made relish! Other plants you could grow your capsicums with are basil and parsley – they also like the same conditions. And, it’s also good to grow chilli near bee-friendly plants to encourage pollination. Later on, if you’re in doubt as to whether the flowers have been pollinated (which needs to happen for them to produce fruit), simply gently brush each flower

with the end of a paint brush. This will spread the pollen and pollinate them. When you’ve found the right spot to plant increase the quality of your soil by mixing in some compost and a good general fertiliser. If you’re growing your chilli in pots, simply use a good potting mix. Then plant each seedling around 40-60cm apart from the next. Give them a light watering when you plant and then just every once and a while give them another drink. You can expect to see chillies in around eight to 12 weeks. If

you like things really hot, reduce your watering once the fruit have set – this is when the flowers start turning into fruit. Some chilli (like our red hot pepper) will start off green and turn red as it ages. Try to harvest the fruit by cutting, rather than pulling and do it just before they look ready – this will encourage your plant to produce more fruit. Lastly, if you’ve grown your chilli plants in pots, be sure to move them somewhere like the under the eaves of the house or indoors before the first frost. This way you’ll be able to enjoy the fruits of your labour again next year

Lovely lavatera likes it warm By Henri Ham LAVATERA IS a lovely plant that is great for expert and beginner gardeners alike. It is sometimes (or often in other parts of the world) known as mallow and has many great traits. It’s easy to plant, grows quickly and produces many flowers. Its pretty flowers are loved by bees and beneficial insects alike. And it’s happiest in dry conditions – perfect for this time of year. Once you’ve got your plants, look for a spot in full sun or part shade with well-drained or sandy

soil. Lavatera is great for growing in borders or garden beds – perfecting for filling space – and pots and containers. Next, dig a little hole and plant each one around 40-50cm apart from the next. Give it a bit of watering when you first plant it but don’t worry if you can’t water it regularly – it thrives in dry conditions making it perfect if you head away over summer. You can get expect to see the start of your lavatera summer show in around three weeks. If you grow seedlings you’ll need to wait a little longer – around eight weeks.

During the fire season, there are some risks you need to know about to help keep you, your family and your property safe. Throughout New Zealand, there are different levels of risk, depending on where you live and what the area around you is like. As we build more and more homes in previously rural areas, the level of risk is different to properties built in a more urban setting. Make sure you check your property and are aware of your surroundings so you can be best prepared this fire season.

Steps you need to take to keep your property safe

Make sure you have a ‘safe zone’ around your property

Have an escape plan and an agreed safe meeting place

- Clear vegetation close to your home. This could fuel a fire if one started. - Choose plants with low flammability – native plants are often better. - Keep your lawns mowed and green. - Don’t store firewood close to the house. - Clear your gutters of dry leaves. - Be careful when using any mechanical equipment in dry conditions.

- Go to www.escapeplanner.co.nz to make a plan to get out of your home safely and agree a safe meeting place. Practise this regularly. - Think about where you will meet if you need to evacuate the area. - Have an emergency evacuation kit in case you need to leave quickly.

Good access for firefighters - Fire trucks need a lot of space to manoeuvre.
